News from PANUG/BizNix - September 30, 2003 http://panug.org - http://biznix.org UPCOMING MEETINGS The October BizNix meeting on October 9 will feature a look at a potential replacement for the SMTP protocol that promises to solve the problems of spam and other problems due to the weaknesses in SMTP. It's downward compatible with SMTP and uses current e-mail addressing thus allowing new and old e-mail systems to exist side-by-side and easy migration. The October PANUG meeting on October 16 will feature a look at sealed systems - this in response to a request from members at the last meeting. Sealed systems are highly resistant to attack, trivial to install and upgrade with little or no user interaction, can automatically detect whether they've been compromised, and dramatically reduce the level of technical support required. LINUX TRIVIA by Dick Pilz PANUG President It's a good thing I didn't latch onto these for last month's trivia contest: The Linux Dictionary: http://panug.org/43 TLDP Guides: http://www.tldp.org/guides.html FEEDBACK There was some feedback on the Cybersecurity report mentioned in the previous broadcast. Here's the URL in case you missed it: http://www.ccianet.org/papers/cyberinsecurity.pdf Patrick Corrigan said that this was the best document of its kind he'd seen and that all of us should distribute it far and wide - such as the decision makers in our companies. Ken Barber said that one of the authors of the report, Dan Geer, was fired from his company for his part in producing a report that was critical of Microsoft's products. Some of you may recall that Ken was victim of this kind of punishment for promoting the use of Open Source software in Oregon State government. A few PANUG members have, in the past, said privately that they too are in delicate political situations where their job would be in jeopardy if they were critical of Microsoft products. We received no feedback saying that the report was not true, biased, etc. DISCLAIMER PANUG and BizNix welcome contributions from all members.
