BIZNIX MEETING

This Thursday is the September BizNix meeting. The
meeting starts at 6:30 and will cover a potporri
of topics.

VICTIM OF ANTI-SPAM
by Scott Hoffman

Among the organizations apparently running amuck in
attempts to deal with s_p_a_m is the City of Portland.
It seems they are blocking whole domains, including
two that I use heavily, mailandnews.com and
myrealbox.com. All mail I send to *.ci.portland.or.us
is returned with the cryptic error, "denied by policy".
Even mail to the postmaster account is returned.

I have solicited the help of a neighbor who is a policy
analyst in the mayor's office, but so far to no avail.
I've also submitted the city to rfc-ignorant.org, but
that is mostly a symbolic effort.

[See the article SPAM SAFEGUARDS in the last broadcast
for one solution to this problem (from the mail server
operator's point-of-view).]

HUMOR?
[Sorry, we lost track of who submitted this.]

"Humans and higher primates share approximately 97%
of their DNA in common. Recent research in primate
programming suggests computing is a task that most
higher primates can easily perform. Visual Basic 6.0
was the preferred IDE for the majority of experiment
primate subjects."

DEFINITELY HUMOR
by Steve Coan

Sys Admin terms to describe user-induced problems:

ONE-DEE-TEN-TEE - (write it out: 1D10T)
PEBKAC - (pronounced "peb-kack") Problem Exists Between
  Keyboard And Chair.
CKI issue - the problem was with the chair-keyboard interface
PICNIC - "Problem In Chair, Not In Computer"

Some other IT-inspired new words you might enjoy:
Permenary - Permanently temporary
Brokearound - A patch or work around that doesn't work
Piduction - Pilot project being run on production equipment
Administrative Engineer - A manager or director who insists
he can engineer a solution or new technology for the
business without consulting the actual engineers
