News from PANUG/BizNix - July 15, 2003 http://panug.org - http://biznix.org PANUG MEETING It's been a few years since PANUG covered data backup technologies at a monthly meeting. It's time for an update. This Thursday, Yosemite Technologies will tell us about the state of the art in backup technologies and their product, TapeWare. TapeWare 7 can run on and backs up Windows, NetWare, Unix, and Linux with disaster recovery features and centralized management. PANUG members will be eligible for a valuable door prize - TapeWare Master Server Enterprise Pack edition with Disaster Recovery valued at over $1000. The meeting is this Thursday at 6:15 pm at Novell's office in Tigard. FEEDBACK In response to Jim Bombardier's complaint about Qwest s_p_a_m problems, Keith Brown responds: I've installed a mail filter that, if it finds uswest.net in the To: or associated headers it delivers it directly into the trashcan. This is mostly effective, but sometimes the MailerDaemon generates emails to internal users (like me) addressing them to the me@uswest.net address. The solution is rather simple really: Just unlist the DNS for uswest.net. Then in Qwest's own machines /etc/hosts files, leave the entry in. The local machines will find what they need and deliver the emails internally (mis-)generated, but the s_p_a_m will all bounce since there will be no external delivery mechanism. Now s_p_a_m generated inside the Qwest domain is a different issue, but one Qwest has a lot of control over. Larry Leatherwood responds to Jeremy Grand's question about upgrading NetWare operating systems: On more than one occasion I have simply taken the existing harddrive with Netware loaded and placed it into the new hardware....boots up everytime and typically you might have to load a few additional drivers like the NIC cards or scsi controllers in order to get the volumes to mount....Also, another neat little trick is to image the NetWare environment onto tape and then load the image onto the new server hard drives-this way I get to keep the old hard drives for other projects! I used to use a product called "snapback live" to do this proceedure. I just see no reason to dump NetWare just because of new hardware. Nakoma - As an existing CNE (4/5x) I cannot justify spending the money for Nakoma training or for that matter upgrading my CNE status to NetWare 6. Now that Novell is coming out with a Linux server version (great move on their part, where else can they go) along with certification...seems to me my time would be better spent acquiring the Certified Linux Engineer certification. After all, Novell is not going to strip me of my CNE status...they are only going to take away a few perks like CNENET access-big deal. Novell should have came up with a better perk that a free exam pass in order to keep me on the NetWare 6 track. DISCLAIMER PANUG and BizNix welcome contributions from all members.
