MICROSOFT SECURITY PATCH

Since we have many new people subscribed to this list,
we'll mention that any email message you receive that
claims to come from Microsoft and includes an attachment
which claims to be a security patch is a fraud. You
SHOULD NOT run the attached programs.

This morning, many of us receivd a message from
"Microsoft Network Security Division" that claimed
to include the "April 2003, Cumulative Patch". DO NOT
run this program on your computer.

We don't normally include these notices in these
email broadcasts because seasoned PANUG and BizNix
members have been warned many times. Now that you've
been warned, we will probably not alert you if this
happens again. If you have run the program and suffered
some kind of attack, we'd be interested in the details
and promise not to make fun of you too badly.

USED COMPUTERS
by Ed Sawicki - Accelerated Learning Center / Tailored Computers

The supply of used computers that I give away to PCC
students learning Linux has dwindled. I'd like to
replenish the supply. We can also use some of those
small (2 to 4 GB) hard disks that are too small to be
useful these days, and some slow CD-ROM drives. Also,
old-style (16-bit) PCMCIA Ethernet cards would be
useful.

If you have used computers or working hard disks or
CD-ROM drives you no longer need and wish to donate them
to a worthy cause, please contact me at ed@alcpress.com

LEGISLATION
by Lorraine Renard

This eweek.com article could easily lead one to
believe that deploying firewalls may be illegal:

At least one PANUG member insists that it is honeypots
that may be on the legal edge - not firewalls. There's a
lot of legislation out there we should be watching. Here
