News from PANUG/BizNix - April 4, 2003 http://panug.org - http://biznix.org MOAD by Ed Sawicki - Accelerated Learning Center / Tailored Computers I've started project MOAD - the Mother Of All Demos. The goal is to build a demonstration network that consists of computers running Linux, Windows, NetWare, and Mac OS X (perhaps others) and show how all of these platforms can communicate with one another. For example, any client computer running Linux, Windows, or OS X can access a SMB (Windows) share running on a Windows, Linux, NetWare, or OS X server. In addition to file server applications, we'll interconnect printing, databases, email, web, instant messaging, DNS, and other protocols/services. The ultimate aim is to show people that they can still get their work done regardless of which operating systems they choose and that moving to other operating systems is not as risky as they might otherwise believe. The network will also be used for learning and research. Students from my PCC classes have volunteered for the project and anyone else is welcome to join us. Since we don't have dedicated physical space, we're going to keep the number of computers to a minimum by using virtualization software such as Linux UMLs, VMware, etc. You can help by donating a computer. We'll need a few computers with a bit of horsepower - 500 MHz processors or better. Intel or AMD is fine. Ed Sawicki explained at a recent PANUG meeting that DNS cache poisoning is very easy to defend against no matter what DNS server software you're using. http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/03/27/sprj.irq.aljazeera.hacked.ap/index.html THE SECOND SUPERPOWER Here's an article that covers a lot of interesting ground. It's mentioned here for those who have an interest in blogs, not for its ant-war theme. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/30087.html ODE TO DA SPEL CHEKER Eye halve a spelling checker It came with my pea sea It plainly marques for my revue Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.
