PANUG MEETING

PANUG's monthly meeting is this Thursday evening at 6:15 pm.
The meeting will start with the usual Q&A and open discussion
session. At about 7:00 pm, David May and Ed Sawicki will
demonstrate how companies can improve their IT operations
with easy to use collaboration tools that allow staff,
consultants, and users to document their systems, networks,
and applications.

Recently, Chuck Quessenberry, a sometimes PANUG presenter,
has claimed that recent improvements in Linux graphical
subsystems now render text better than on most Windows
computers. Previously, Linux desktop screens frequently
did a poor job of rendering text on graphical screens.
These improvements take away another reason for sticking
with Windows on the desktop. Chuck has been invited to
demonstrate these claims at this upcoming meeting.

W2K WEBDAV SECURITY PROBLEM

Yet another security hole has been discovered in Microsoft's IIS.
IIS 5.0 on W2K has a buffer overflow exploit in the WebDAV component
of IIS. The error permits the remote execution of arbitrary
commands, allowing Code Red and NIMDA-like infections.

WebDAV is used to move files to the web server using the HTTP/HTTPS
protocol. It's enabled by default and Microsoft has assigned a
severity rating of CRITICAL to this problem.

What you may not know is that WebDAV is supported on Linux and it's
free. You can solve these problems once and for all by switching
from IIS to a Linux server running Apache and WebDAV.
