EMACS TRAINING

The BizNix user group is holding a 3-hour training course
on Emacs on Saturday, February 1, 2003 from 9:00 am to
about 12:00 pm or, possibly, longer. This session is geared
to Emacs beginners. You should have an understanding of
basic text editor concepts.

Emacs runs on any Unix/Linux system as well as Microsoft
Windows. There are command line and GUI versions. If you're
unfamiliar with Emacs, a description can be found here:

http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/emacs.html#Whatis

We'll have a limited number of computers available. You
should bring your own notebook computer if possible. Note
that Emacs is already installed if you're running Mac
OS X (Jaguar).

BizNix members may attend for free. Non-members pay only
$10. You can join BizNix now and attend for free. Visit
the BizNix Web site for details.

MICROSOFT OPEN SOURCE

Here's the story: Microsoft will share Windows source code
with governments and international organizations to allow
them to conduct security reviews. Participants in the
Government Security program will also be able to visit
Microsoft's development facilities.

SCO AND LINUX

Interesting articles about SCO and possible IP claims against
Linux:

SCO Looks For Intellectual-Property Claim On Linux

Are Linux Users Infringing on SCO's Property?

It's widely believed that the Linux operating system, its
libraries, and system software have been written from scratch
and do not carry code from any previous version or
implementation of Unix. SCO would likely have difficulty
with a IP claim against Linux. But who knows?
