News from PANUG/BizNix - December 12, 2002 http://panug.org - http://biznix.org NO BIZNIX MEETING TONIGHT The BizNix meeting is supposed to be tonight but many of us are at the Itec show. We're going to combine the BizNix meeting with the PANUG meeting next week. FEEDBACK Regarding the Windows/Linux TCO article a few days ago, Christian Bayer had this to say: I just wished to point out the slightly incomplete description of the evolution of Windows. While it's cetainly true that Windows original roots were in DOS and that current versions evolved from previous versions, current versions of Windows' roots are a combination of previous versions with a large helping of OS/2 rather than DOS. Oh, by the way, I think it's only been three days since I edited an autoexec.bat, config.sys and win.ini file. Paul Rogers has this to say about the same article: In my experience as a Linux newbie, Linux has a very steep learning curve. Somewhere up there it may plateau, but it's not at all easy to get there. Because of Windows place in the market, the changes from version to version you cite are more of an incemental nature and getting to this place is a sunk cost. This is a particular issue if one contemplates a wholesale change-over. Where will you get the trained personnel?
