News from PANUG/BizNix - August 12, 2002 http://panug.org - http://biznix.org WEB DEVELOPER WANTED by Christian Bayer I am seeking a web developer to redo a website that is done in Active Server Pages. I want the site to be strictly non-proprietary technology, so I can administer it more easily. LPI (Linux Professional Institute) has _finally_ updated their Level 1 exams. Their old exams had some lunacy such as testing your knowledge of BIND4 instead of BIND8 and/or BIND9. I asked LPI to remove BIND4-related questions from their test in March 2001 (because BIND4 is obsolete and can be attacked by even novice crackers). LPI couldn't because, even though it made sense to do so, they had a formal procedure to go through. It took a year and a half for LPI to stroke their snail-paced system. These new exams will be live with VUE and Prometric on August 13, 2002 - tomorrow. VUE will continue to offer the existing Level 1 exams until November 1 to fulfill needs of vendors and candidates who have prepared based on the old exam objectives. The new exam objectives are here: www.lpi.org/p-index.html. I used to think that the Comptia Linux+ test was Linux distribution- neutral but it's clearly not. The training materials I've seen are targeted squarely at Red Hat Linux. I have to take this test soon (to satisfy my publisher - I'm already LPI certified) so I'll report on it afterwards. NEWS Patrick Corrigan points out the following article that reports on the problems a company can face when IT departments battle over religious isssues rather than trying to solve business issues. (a Dilbert) http://www.theregus.com/content/4/25943.htm An Apache vulnerability was discovered and fixed late last week. The problem only exists when Apache is running on Windows, OS/2, and NetWare. Refer to the Apache web site for details: http://httpd.apache.org If you're not up to speed on TCPA/Palladium, here's a FAQ that gives you the details: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/users/rja14/tcpa-faq.html FEEDBACK Regarding the article When Dreamcasts Attack, Christian bayer writes: The Register article fails to mention that Dreamcast Broad Band Adapters (BBA) are rare and usually go for $150.00 on eBay (I would like one myself). Also of Dreamcast note, they run Linux, NetBSD, and NewOS (whose kernel is the basis for OpenBeOS). My website (http://www.bayerwerke.com) has links to the Linux and NetBSD sites but not the NewOS site because NewOS currently doesn't do anything useful (AFAIK). HOW DOES A CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? Windows NT Chicken: Will cross the road in June. No, August. September for sure. Mac Chicken: No reasonable chicken owner would ever want a chicken to cross the road, so there's no way to tell it to. Microsoft Chicken: It's already on both sides of the road. And it just bought the road. Java Chicken: If your road needs to be crossed by a chicken, the server will download one to the other side. (Of course, those are chicklets) OOP Chicken: It doesn't need to cross the road, it just sends a message. Assembler Chicken: First it builds the road ... C++ Chicken: The chicken wouldn't have to cross the road, you'd simply refer to it on the other side. Visual Basic Chicken: USHighways!TheRoad.cross (aChicken) Delphi Chicken: The chicken is dragged across the road and dropped on the other side. Lotus Chicken: Don't you dare try to cross the road the same way we do!
