The location and detailed directions are on the BizNix web site at: http://biznix.org The main presentation will be Debian Linux presented by David May. Emphasis will be on Debian-unique features such as the easy to use package management. A second presentation will be about authenticating downloaded software to ensure it doesn't contain Trojan Horse programs or is hacked in any way. USA TODAY DISCOVERS LINUX An article in USA Today tells how Linux is saving companies lots of money. The writer appears to think that Linux is just now being discovered by Corporate America - he's a year or two behind. He also describes Sun Microsoystems as having a Microsoft-like attitude towards Linux. That's not/no longer the case. Otherwise a good article. http://www.usatoday.com/usatonline/20020805/4333165s.htm IBM, LINUX, & INTEL Here's a snippet from an article that appears on IBM's web site that helps explain IBM's committment to both Linux and Intel: The Intel platform is the fastest-growing hardware platform in the server business, and with IA-64 we're beginning to see greater penetration of Intel servers into enterprise computing. This comes at a time when Linux has moved out of the universities, away from just doing file, print and other basic infrastructure work, and into the enterprise. Linux is showing growth that's about four times that of Windows, and its adoption rate far surpasses that of any other operating environment. http://www-1.ibm.com/linux/news/michos.shtml NOTICE FOR NEW SUBSCRIBERS We've had many new subscribers to this list in recent weeks. If you're new to this list, you need to know some things that existing members already know. This is a combined mailing list for the Portland Area Networking User Group (PANUG) and the BizNix user group. PANUG's focus is on anything related to computer networking. The BizNix focus is on things related to Linux and Unix. The contents of these periodic broadcasts are created by and influenced by the members of these two user groups. You're welcome to contribute as well - even if you're not a paid-up member. You're likely to observe that the content of this list tends to be pro-Linux and is often critical of Microsoft. This is a reflection of the attitudes of the people who contribute to the list, but a relatively small number of the list members contribute content. In recent years we've had about 20 people contribute content yet there are about 600 people subscribed to the list. Though it's rare, we do get some hate mail and we've been called "Linux weenies" (and worse) before. If you think the list should have more diverse content and varied opinions expressed, then it's up to you to make that happen by contributing that content and those opinions. Send your article, news story, or opinion to info@biznix.org or info@panug.org.
