News from PANUG - January 24, 2001 http://www.panug.org eMICROSOFT It's a bad day for Microsoft's Internet presence. If you haven't noticed, Microsoft's Internet sites are down. Their DNS servers respond to pings but they don't answer DNS queries. Microsoft uses four DNS servers and they're all down. These servers run Microsoft DNS server software and the rumors are that they were attacked but this is unconfirmed. Other big computer company sites are up and working including Apple, IBM, Novell and Sun. The hacker/attacker communities have been talking recently about the Microsoft anti-trust case and the likelihood that George Bush will either have the case dropped or have the penalty softened. They don't want this to happen and may step up their cyber attacks on Microsoft. Today may have been such an attack. This may be a good time for you to review the security of your Internet site. Coincidentally, PANUG is hosting two one-day classes in February that will teach you how to do just that. DNS AND FIREWALL TRAINING PANUG is hosting two classs in February. The "DNS Boot Camp" is Monday, February 26 and the "Mastering Firewalls" class is Tuesday, February 27. Both classes are held at Novell's office in Tigard. The DNS Boot Camp class covers DNS concepts and how to deploy and configure DNS servers. Emphasis is placed on reliability and security so your DNS servers survive an attack. The class covers BIND, TinyDNS and Microsoft's DNS. You'll receive a 100 page course workbook. The Firewalls class covers firewall concepts and configuring firewalls. The class begins with an overview of Internet-related protocols such as IP, TCP, UDP and ICMP. You'll learn how attackers exploit these protocols and how a firewall can be configured to protect your network. The class focuses on the built-in firewall feature of Linux called IP Chains. However, the concepts you learn can be applied to any firewall. You'll receive a 75 page course workbook. You can attend each class for $195. PANUG members earn a $15 discount. More information will appear on the PANUG web site soon.
