Becoming a Member

There are three membership types available. These are:

Individual Membership$35 per calendar year.
Student Membership$15 per calendar year. You must be a full-time student.
Corporate Membership$115 per calendar year.

Membership term

PANUG membership is by calendar year. Your membership ends on the last day of the calendar year. If you've been a member in the past and you wish to renew your membership, you pay $35 regardless of when you renew. You don't save any money by delaying your membership renewal.

People who have never been members before may pay a pro-rated rate of $3.00 per month. If, for example, you join in May, you would pay $21 because there are seven months left in the year.

Corporate membership

A Corporate membership allows any three people within the company to take advantage of PANUG benefits at any one time. For example, up to three people (any three) from the company may attend PANUG members-only events or receive discounts for a PANUG-sponsored, pay-to-attend seminar or educational event. Contact us for pricing for Corporate memberships that go beyond three people.

Payment

You can send your check (made out to PANUG) to:
 PANUG
 PO BOX 780-B
 Lake Oswego, OR 97034

You can pay by credit card by phoning ALC at 503-635-6370. American Express, VISA and Master Card are accepted. Click here for a membership form that you can print out from your web browser.

Member Announcements

PANUG members may submit announcements for inclusion in the next PANUG email broadcast. Typically, these announcements will be job listings and items for sale.

There are limitations:

  • Members may submit two announcements each year at no cost. Additional announcements cost $25 each.
  • Items for sale must be computer-related.
  • Announcement text must be short. PANUG reserves the right to edit the text.
  • There are additional limitations on job postings where the position is for a company other than the member's company. Contact PANUG at info@panug.org if you have questions about this.
  • Members may not submit announcements about services they offer unless it is part of a PANUG-related event.

Send the text of your announcement to announce@panug.org.

Email Redirection/SPAM reduction

PANUG offers email redirection and spam reduction as a member benefit. Email redirection is where you're assigned a email address in PANUG's domain but any incoming mail to that address is redirected to your own existing mail address. Let's use an example. Betty has a email address where she works. She uses this for both business and personal communications. Her email address is betty@sales.ajaxwidgets.com. Over time, she builds up quite a number of people that she corresponds with. Many of these people have Betty listed in their email address books. Betty decides to leave her company and work somewhere else. She now has to notify everyone she corresponds with of her new address.

PANUG's email redirection can be used to simplify things. Betty can be assigned an address of, say, betty@panug.org. Any mail that is sent to betty@panug.org is redirected to betty@sales.ajaxwidgets.com. If Betty's email address changes, she only has to notify PANUG of the change.

Note: People can still send mail to Betty directly (bypassing PANUG) by using her "real" email address.

You'll also get spam suppression courtesy of eScrubber. Mail from known spammers is automatically rejected. If you're a PANUG member and wish to get an email redirection account with spam suppression, send a email to info@panug.org

If you want spam suppression for everyone in your company, visit the eScrubber web page for details.

Web pages

Members can have web pages on PANUG's web server. These pages can be used to promote your business, offer information to others, whatever. The PANUG Board reserves the right to disallow content they consider to be detrimental to PANUG.

You web pages are accessed with a URL such as http://smith.panug.org or http://www.smith.panug.org. Web pages are free to PANUG members as long as traffic is not too high.

There are limitations:

  • You cannot access your web pages using insecure protocols like FTP. You must use SSH-based file transfer programs like scp. There are Windows versions of these programs. If you cannot do this, you can send your web pages to us via email and we can add them to your directory.
  • You cannot use CGI scripts.
  • We do not support any of the server-side FrontPage extensions. If you develop your web page content with FrontPage, you would probably not be happy with this service.

Time server

The
Accelerated Learning Center maintains a private time server that PANUG members are welcome to use at no charge. The time server uses both NTP and the Time Protocol. To access the time server using either protocol, you must send a message to info@alcpress.com with the following information:
  • Your name
  • Your company name
  • The IP address of your machine that will be accessing the time server.

The time server's name is ntp.alcpress.com. At present, the firewall is not filtering the time protocols by IP address but it will in a few weeks. For this reason, you must register your IP address with ALC by email. Clearly, this will not work for machines that do not use static IP addresses.

To add this time server to your NTP server's configuration file, just add the following statement to the file:

server ntp.alcpress.com

On Unix/Linux/xBSD machines, the configuration file is called ntp.conf and is usually found in the /etc directory.

At present, this is a stratum 3 server but we'll make it a stratum 2 server when the client population warrants it - according to the NTP guidelines. For most of you, this difference is unimportant.
