About PANUGPANUG is the Portland Area Networking User Group located in Portland, Oregon. We're a support group for people who must support computers and computer networks. PANUG's members must support popular operating systems such as Linux, NetWare, Unix, and Windows as well as virtually all things that relate to the Internet, LANS, WANS, security, etc. PANUG also supports special interest groups (SIGs), such as the HIPAA Support Group. PANUG is one of the most active and best organized user groups anywhere. The group was formed in 1985 and has been active ever since. Since its first meeting in 1985 only 5 monthly meetings have ever been cancelled - most due to weather. Monthly meetings feature presentations from both vendors and PANUG members. We are fortunate to have several members who have worked with networking products since 1983. Additionally, the membership includes a few professional speakers who lecture on networking-related topics at industry events as well as one or two people who write magazine articles from time to time. The Question & Answer session that starts each monthly meeting is a great way to get help on perplexing problems. With so many networking experts in one room, it's unlikely you'll come away without a solution or recommendation to your question. Mission StatementPANUG is a support group for computer networking professionals. The membership is provided with technical assistance, education, the latest information about networking-related products and technology as well as other services that enhance the careers of its members. Communications are provided via monthly meetings, educational events, periodic e-mail broadcasts, and the PANUG web site. PANUG's monthly meetings are intended to bring members up-to-speed on new and existing technologies and products that relate to networking. Additionally, PANUG provides more formal training classes. ByLawsPANUG's Bylaws are available here. TrainingIn the late 1980s, viruses became a significant problem for PANUG members. We responded by inviting John McAfee to Portland to bring our members up to speed on the problem and solutions. While John couldn't come, he did send Charles Preston - a highly regarded figure in the computer security field. Ever since then PANUG has offered numerous courses such as:
PANUG has hosted numerous other training courses at conferences in Portland such as the Network Technology Conferences and Linux Live event. |
